Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt, producer
Harry Gittes got a familiar vibe. "I had
the same feeling when I saw Warren Schmidt as
I did when I saw the Easy Rider lawyer...I
was blown away," Gittes says.
Harry knows Jack, literally. He first met the
three-time Oscar-winner in 1959, when Gittes was
an adverting copywriter and Nicholson was a struggling
actor. When he saw Nicholson's first movie, The
Cry Baby Killer, Gittes says he felt he owed
it to his pal to be straight and advise him to
get a day job.
Fortunately, he held his tongue, and the rest
is cinematic history. About Schmidt is
Gittes’ third collaboration with Nicholson,
and he calls this film his gift to his longtime
friend. “I really feel we've achieved something
together that's just fabulous," Gittes says.
